The collision itself can often be analyzed using the physical law of conservation of momentum. So, if we know the vehicle weights, the speeds and directions of the vehicles at the point of separation, and the direction of the vehicles coming into the collision, for instance, then we can determine the speed of the vehicles at the point of impact.

This can be done using Linear Momentum and Angular Momentum.
